Topological gaps by twisting

چکیده

It is shown that twisted $n$-layers have an intrinsic degree of freedom living on $2n$-tori, which the phason supplied by relative slidings layers and twist generates pseudo magnetic fields. As a result, host higher dimensional topological phases those characterized second Chern numbers can be found in bi-layer. Indeed, our investigation phononic lattices with interactions modulated lattice reveals Hofstadter-like spectral butterflies terms angle, whose gaps carry predicted invariants. Our work demonstrates how multi-layered systems are virtual laboratories for studying physics quantum Hall effect to generate edge chiral modes simply sliding each other. In context classical metamaterials, both photonic phononic, these findings open path engineering pumping via simple twisting sliding.

Topological Twisting of Multiple M2-brane Theory

Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson theory with infinite dimensional gauge group has been suggested to describe M5-brane as a condensation of multiple M2-branes. Here we perform a topological twisting of the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson theory. The original SO(8) R-symmetry is broken to SO(3) × SO(5), where the former may be interpreted as a diagonal subgroup of the Euclidean M5-brane world-volume symmetry ...

The other topological twisting of N = 4 Yang – Mills

We present the alternative topological twisting of N = 4 Yang–Mills, in which the path integral is dominated not by instantons, but by flat connections of the complexified gauge group. The theory is nontrivial on compact orientable four-manifolds with nonpositive Euler number, which are necessarily not simply connected. On such manifolds, one finds a single topological invariant, analogous to t...

Twisting light by nonlinear photonic crystals.

We report the observation of nonlinear interactions in quadratic nonlinear crystals having a geometrically twisted susceptibility pattern. The quasi-angular-momentum of these crystals is imprinted on the interacting photons during the nonlinear process so that the total angular momentum is conserved. These crystals affect three basic physical quantities of the output photons: energy, translatio...

Chromatin remodeling by DNA bending, not twisting.

Single-stranded regions (gaps) in nucleosomal DNA interfere with action of the RSC chromatin-remodeling complex, monitored by exposure of restriction endonuclease cutting sites. Single-strand breaks (nicks) in the DNA, by contrast, have no effect. Gaps on one side of the cutting site are inhibitory, but gaps on the other side are not. A gap >100 bp from the cutting site is as effective as a gap...

Twisting of glycosidic bonds by hydrolases.

Patterns of scissile bond twisting have been found in crystal structures of glycoside hydrolases (GHs) that are complexed with substrates and inhibitors. To estimate the increased potential energy in the substrates that results from this twisting, we have plotted torsion angles for the scissile bonds on hybrid Quantum Mechanics::Molecular Mechanics energy surfaces. Eight such maps were construc...
